In 2000 the UN General Assembly unanimously resolved to support the
Millennium Development Goals (MDG) and to reduce world poverty by
50% in 2015. One of the targets of MDG number 7 is to increase
access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation facilities by
50%. Progress has been made and access to safe drinking water has
increased, but in the developing world 1.2 billion people still
have no access to safe drinking water and 2.6 billion people still
lack basic sanitation facilities.
Increased access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation
facilities also contributes to the realization of other MDGs, like
combating diseases and reduction of child mortality.
