More than half of the world’s population lives in coastal regions,
and over the next decades this figure is expected to rise to 75%.
Most coastal areas provide rich sources of food, energy and
minerals, sustaining for a large part the livelihood of coastal
communities. However, economic development and rapid population
growth result in increasing pressure on coastal resources, often
exceeding sustainable levels. If these processes continue unabated,
the long-term potential for sustainable development is compromised.
Coastal areas are also susceptible to the effects of climate
change, including sea level rise, coastal erosion, increased sea
water temperature, and changes in timing and amounts of
rainfall.
